Here it is at last for all the world to see! Thank you lucpebo...exhibit A in the case against all those who would say that Karajan was simply a power-hungry slickster who skated over the surface of music. How opposite the truth is! Absolutely extraordinary rehearsal footage, Karajan passionately working without the score in extreme detail to make the music come alive. Please add more if you can, lucpebo!!

Ah Karajan... master of the art. I find him absolutly incredible! One of the best definitely!... It's amazing to see how much time he passes on little details and the importance he gives to every single little thing in the music!! Oh and I just finished putting the whole video of this rehearsal on Youtube if anybody is interested in seeing more!

The master at work. Please, PLEASE post more videos like this; Karajan was one of the last of the great conductors in the German tradition, and a complete musician. Nobody pays the slightest attention to the small details that he did, and the music suffers accordingly.

oh now, there I must disagree-some pay great attention, but not to understate Von K.He simply had a deeper connection to the music through a common culture that pushed him to reach for an inevitable understanding.Would Shumann concur with his interpretation? we will never know-that is the mystery.Great to see the aim and struggle to achieve.

Karajan's artistry lasts the test of time. There were recordings by him which I admired as a teenager in the 1970s but what has impressed me is that these same recordings appear greater to me as time goes on. The DG Bruckner 5 shows amazing mastery, even more than I realised in the 1970s. All this rubbish about him being a Nazi must stop (the Richard Osborne biography of him makes it clear that he was NOT a Nazi). Incidentally, the sound on this Schumann 4 video is a semitone sharp.

... I forgot that they used a slightly higher pitch in parts of Europe in Karajan's time. So it's only slightly sharp, not a full semitone. More please!

Great posting. Almost three minutes of rehearsal to get right the first few notes of the symphony. So much attention to detail, finally you can see here that Karajan's sound was not just because his orchestra, he made it sound like this.

really great posting, indeed. But I would like to suggest something, if I may: don't write something that you're not sure in,for others to inform. This is not recorded in Berlin and not in 1963, then in Vienna with Vienna Symphony Orchestra in November, 1965. There will be much more other Videos of Karajan next year for the Karajan's 100-year-anniversary for all Karajan fans in stores worldwide. And, lucpebo, great thing you posted, thank you very much for that!
