Hynk39 ::: Favorites What actually happens is there's a certain amount of time before the piece gets 'lockdown' in which it can't be moved anymore. During that time it's possible to maneuver and rotate the piece before it becomes locked in the playfield. It's also possible to delay the 'lockdown' time by making the piece drop down another line, each line it drops down resets the 'lockdown' timer.
